Origin Story

At that time, the bhikkhunīs stood and talked with lay people and non-Buddhist renunciates alone in a secluded place, and as a result, they touched their bodies, spoke coarse, unwholesome words about sexual desire, and some were forced to engage in sexual intercourse. When the senior bhikkhunīs saw it, they criticized them in all kinds of ways, … “I now lay down a precept for the bhikkhunīs, as explained above. From now on, this precept should be recited thus:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī stands and talks with a lay person or a non-Buddhist renunciate alone in a secluded place, it’s a pācittiya.’”
