Origin Story
At that time, the bhikkhunīs taught others to give medical treatments. Lay people came and said: “Teach us dhamma.” Then they said: “Treat (diseases connected with) heat like this, treat cold like this, treat wind like this, treat (other) diseases like this.” The lay people said: “We came for the dhamma, not for treating diseases.” And they also criticized them: “These people just study medicine, they don’t know the path of dhamma. If it weren’t so, why don’t they teach us dhamma?” When the senior bhikkhunīs heard it, they criticized them in all kinds of ways, … “I now lay down a precept for the bhikkhunīs, as explained above. From now on, this precept should be recited thus:
Final Ruling
‘If a bhikkhunī teaches others to give medical treatments as a profession, it’s a pācittiya.’”
