Origin Story

At that time, the bhikkhunīs lay out bedding in the lay houses of their aquaintances and stayed there. The lay people criticized them: “Why do they go forth from their own homes, and stay in someone else’s home? We don’t like to see these inauspicious things.” When the senior bhikkhunīs heard it, they criticized them in all kinds of ways, … “I now lay down a precept for the bhikkhunīs, as explained above. From now on, this precept should be recited thus:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī, without asking a lay person, just lays out bedding in their home and stays there, it’s a pācittiya.’”

Explanations

For a sikkhamānā and a sāmaṇerī, it’s a dukkaṭa.

If she stays at a relative’s house, the offense isn’t committed.
