Origin Story

At that time, the bhikkhunīs just opened the gate of the monastic compound at night and went out. They didn’t tell the people who stayed behind to have it closed. At night, criminals came and stole the bhikkhunīs’ robes and bowls. The senior bhikkhunīs criticized them in all kinds of ways, … “I now lay down a precept for the bhikkhunīs, as explained above. From now on, this precept should be recited thus:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī just opens the gate of the monastic compound at night, goes out, and doesn’t tell the other bhikkhunīs to have it closed, it’s a pācittiya.’”

Explanations

For a sikkhamānā and a sāmaṇerī, it’s a dukkaṭa.

If it’s not a frightening place, the offense isn’t committed.
