Relinquishment With Confession 23

The 23rd training precept: Not relinquishing the kaṭhina robe at the right time.

Origin Story

Location as before. The World-honored One had given this instruction: The bhikkhunīs should relinquish the kaṭhina robe at the right time. Only Thullanandā was unwilling to relinquish it. As before, she incurred a transgression. The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha gathered the bhikkhunīs for this reason as before, and he asked Thullanandā: “Did you really not want to relinquish the kaṭhina robe when the right time had come?” She answered: “I really did.” The World-honored One criticized her, as explained in detail, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī doesn’t relinquish the kaṭhina robe at the right time, it’s a nissaggiya pācittiya.’”
