Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga

Confession 106

The 106th training precept: Giving others the going forth and the full ordination without seniority.

Origin Story

At Sāvatthī. Then bhikkhus who didn’t have 10 vassa yet gave others the going forth and the full ordination. The bhikkhunīs did the same. Then the group-of-twelve bhikkhunīs had very many disciples. They went to the the residence of the group-of-six (bhikkhus), and the group-of-six said: “You’re surrounded by very many disciples.” The bhikkhunīs said: “Just as the noble ones give others the going forth and the full ordination, we’re doing the same.” (The bhikkhus) asked: “Is there no difference between you and us?” (The bhikkhunīs) answered: “There’s no difference.” The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha asked and criticized, as explained in detail, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī, who doesn’t have 12 vassa yet, gives others the going forth and the full ordination, it’s a pācittiya.’”

Explanations

“A bhikkhunī” is as above.

“Giving others the going forth” means the sāmaṇera precepts.

“Giving the full ordination” means with a formal act with a motion as fourth.
