Confession 113

The 113th training precept: Not supporting and protecting.

Origin Story

Location as before. Then Thullanandā bhikkhunī gave the going forth and the full ordination to all the women who came, but didn’t support and protect them. They just went around as they pleased: Some looked around outside the gate, some hung around on the porch, some were up on the roof of the monastery building, and some peeped through windows. It went on all day in this way. When the bhikkhunīs saw them, they were upset and asked: “Whose students are you?” They answered: “Thullā bhikkhunī’s.” The bhikkhunīs told her: “Why doesn’t the noble one support and protect these students?” She answered: “I have many students. How could I support them?” The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha asked and criticized, as explained in detail, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī gives someone the going forth and the full ordination, and doesn’t support and protect her, it’s a pācittiya.’”

Explanations

“A bhikkhunī” means Thullanandā, or any other bhikkhunī.

“The going forth etc.” is as explained above.
