Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga

Confession 116

The 116th training precept: Not giving the the six training rules, but giving the full ordination.

Origin Story

Location as before. Then Thullanandā bhikkhunī gave a 20 year-old girl the going forth, and thought to herself: “If she was 18, she could receive the six rules and the six supplementary rules. She’s now already 20, so why would I still need to give her the two-year sikkhamānā training?” So she gave her the full ordination. The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha asked and criticized, as explained in detail, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī knows that a girl is 20, doesn’t give her the two-year training in the six rules and the six supplementary rules, and just gives her the full ordination, it’s a pācittiya.’”

Explanations

“A bhikkhunī” means Thullā bhikkhunī, or any other bhikkhunī.
