Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga

Confession 124

The 124th training precept: Giving the going forth and the full ordination every year.

Origin Story

Location as before. Then Thullanandā bhikkhunī gave the going forth and the full ordination to someone every year, and she didn’t give them a name. If something was going on, she just called them: “Hey, sāmaṇerī! Hey, sikkhamānā! Hey, young one!” The bhikkhunīs heard it and said to Thullā bhikkhunī: “Noble one, why do you give the going forth to someone every year?” She replied to the bhikkhunīs: “I gave them the going forth to tie up their enemies.” A bhikkhunī asked her: “Who are these enemies?” (Thullanandā) replied: “You’re a great enemy. You don’t tolerate me.” The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha asked and criticized, as explained in detail, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī gives the going forth and the full ordination to someone every year, it’s a pācittiya.’”

Explanations

“A bhikkhunī” means Thullanandā, or any other bhikkhunī.

“Every year” means giving the going forth and the full ordination to someone each year.
