Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga
Confession 130
The 130th training precept: Scolding the sangha.
Origin Story
Location as before. Then Thullanandā bhikkhunī spoke all kinds of words that criticized the bhikkhunī sangha, (claiming that they) engaged in wrong livelihood and led others to do the same. She said to the other bhikkhunīs: “You’re foolish and unskillful. You don’t know what should be given and what should be done. You haven’t learned sangha matters.” The bhikkhunīs admonished her: “Noble one, how could it be suitable to say such words of criticism?” Thullā bhikkhunī said: “Suitable or not, I’ve already said it.” The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha asked and criticized, as explained in detail, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:
Final Ruling
‘If a bhikkhunī criticizes the sangha, it’s a pācittiya.’”
