Confession 137

The 137th training precept: Eating again after having eaten.

Origin Story

Location as before. Then Thullanandā bhikkhunī took her bowl in the morning and entered the city on almsround. Having asked for and received food, she placed it in her room, ate as much as she wanted, and then did walking meditation. Having finished her walking meditation, she returned and ate food again. When the food in her bowl was finished, she relaxed her body and lay down. The bhikkhunīs said: “Noble one, after having eaten, you did walking meditation. Having walked, you ate again. So now you’re full and laying down?” When Thullanandā heard this, she badly abused and criticized the other bhikkhunīs. The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha asked and criticized, as explained in detail, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī eats again after having eaten, it’s a pācittiya.’”

Explanations

“A bhikkhunī” means Thullanandā, or any other bhikkhunī.

“Eating again after having eaten” means having eaten until full and later eating again.
