Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga

Confession 162-165

The 162nd-165th training precepts: Having a sikkhamānā etc. massage one’s body.

Origin Story

Location as before. Then Thullanandā bhikkhunī had sikkhamānās massage her body. When they touched her, she felt pleasure. The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha asked if it was true or false, and she answered that it was true. He criticized her, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:

Final Ruling

‘If a bhikkhunī has a sikkhamānā massage her body, it’s a pācittiya.’”

Explanations

“A bhikkhunī” means Thullanandā etc.

“A sikkhamānā” means someone training in the six rules and the six supplementary rules for two years.

Making someone massage one’s body and incuring a pācittiya offense are as explained in detail before.

In the same way, if she has sāmaṇerīs, lay women, or non-Buddhist renunciate women massage her body, the dialogue and the committing of the offense should be remembered as before. (The above are three more rules.)
