Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga
Confession 134
The 134th training precept: Being stingy with monasteries.
Origin Story
Location as before. Then Thullanandā bhikkhunī built a bhikkhunī monastery. On the upper story, a bhikkhunī was residing. When she walked up, there was a lot of noise. Thullā bhikkhunī heard it and anger arose: “Where did we obtain this rogue creature? She walks like a she-elephant with her feet stomping noisily about. She’s uneducated.” The bhikkhunīs said: “Noble one, why are you stingy with the monastery and say such coarse words?” She answered: “What’s wrong with my anger? I built this monastery. I cracked my hands and feet, exhausted my body, and (endured) all kinds of hardships. Therefore I’m stingy.” The bhikkhunīs told the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus told the Buddha. The Buddha asked and criticized, as explained in detail, down to: “I’ll lay down another training precept. You should recite it like this:
Final Ruling
‘If a bhikkhunī is stingy with monasteries, it’s a pācittiya.’”
Explanations
“A bhikkhunī” means Thullanandā, or any other bhikkhunī.
“Being stingy with monasteries” means being stingy with the residences of bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs.
